Keepers of the Trail is a documentary film by D.J. Hartman set for release in the Fall of 2014, just in time for another Canadian winter. In our constant rush to innovate we sometimes lose touch with the old ways of doing things, simply because they were old. There are times, however, where certain people see through this facade of progress and find solace in the old way of doing things. I was introduced to traditional winter travel by my good friends Dave and Kie Marrone and was immediately taken aback by the lifestyle. Their initial goal was to travel through Northern Ontario’s frozen winter landscape, but it quickly became apparent that the best way to do so was to travel just as the First Nation’s and Fur Traders had travelled before them. Modern snowshoes and tents were no replacement for wood and canvas in the boreal forest.
